Heaviest Daily Rainfall On 24 August 2021 For August Since 1983

Rainfall hit a record high on Tuesday, 24 August 2021! There was more rain in 3 hours than Singapore had recorded on any other day in August since 1983.

In a Facebook post, the National Environment Agency (NEA) reported rainfall of 239.8mm at Mandai and 226.2mm at Bukit Panjang as at noon. It is the highest daily total rainfall for August 2021 to date, and has surpassed the record highest daily total rainfall of 181.8mm at Changi on 22 Aug 1983!

According to the NEA, the rainy weather was due to strong convergence of winds over Singapore and the surrounding vicinity. The equatorial Pacific Ocean is currently in a neutral state with no developing El Nino or La Nina. The Indian Ocean Dipole is currently in a negative state which typically brings more rainfall to the region, and could be a contributing factor to the recent wet weather that we have been experiencing.

The heavy downpour led to flooding in several areas, including a stretch of Dunearn Road. Footages circulated on social media showing vehicles driving through flooded Dunearn Road was quite surreal.
